2015: Where Now?

Thursday, January 1st, 2015

We wish all our readers a Happy New Year. It is difficult to predict where we are headed. This blog has a very long shopping list of priorities but today we will stick to three.

The first is to restore some degree of political confidence by demonstrating in May that the UK is ready for major reforms on how we are governed as a Union of nation states in which England predominates. The political parties, all of them, have to come to voters with clear offers of their intentions.

Second, we have to put the economy on a path to growth which is not dependent on house price inflation and is rebalanced towards making and exporting, rather than importing and consuming. The Coalition has made almost no progress in this declared intention. Not only will this require an economic plan a good deal better than anything at present on offer. It will require clarity about our intentions over Europe, which is now beginning to alarm business, frighten investors and threaten jobs. There must also be a complete reinvention of our destructive relationship with Russia, which is economically damaging to us, politically sterile and blind of any strategic vision.

Third, but as a  priority, we have to unravel what may prove to be the most shocking and widespread horror in our modern history. Child abuse. It now appears to be on a scale beyond imagining and organised from the highest levels through to the remotest corners. To unravel the scandal and these horrific crimes against children may unravel the establishment itself. That may not be a bad thing.
