A Plea for the Forgotten

Thursday, November 29th, 2018

Brexit, like a forest fire, is starting to consume everything in its path. The government, parliament, the media, everybody it seems including this blog, talk and argue about nothing else.

Yet out there we have disgusting vermin and drug invested prisons, thousands sleeping rough on the streets, unsafe maternity units, deficient mental healthcare, problems with Universal Credit unresolved, shortages of decent affordable housing; the list is long and disturbing. One after another watchdogs and investigators report on problems which shock, right across the public service sector, yet which remain unresolved. Statements are issued by one ministry after another showing either complacency, denial or dysfunction.

This is no way to run a country. Brexit is one thing. It should not be there at all or it should be better organised. But all the rest are actually people’s lives, ongoing, right now. And they must be addressed with action and improvement, not platitudes and excuses. Right now.

BREXIT CRISIS: Now the Bank Weighs In.

Wednesday, November 28th, 2018

Into the mounting chaos which now passes for government in our country, the Bank of England has tonight added its voice to the chorus of forecasts that any kind of Brexit will cost, so that economically we will be worse off, but with a No Deal Brexit, catastrophically so. Meanwhile increasing numbers of opinion polls are beginning to show that a significant majority of the public think Brexit is not worth the cost.

The prospect of Brexit being abandoned grows stronger every day.

Zara Vine One by [Raven, Tor]

Zara Vine is a modern woman with a troubled history and a talent for turning baggage into power. As the youngest Detective Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police she is forced to resign because of an armed response in which an innocent is shot. Her career in tatters, her marriage over and worst of all, the death of her only child, she decides to leap to oblivion from a famous cliff top. Saved by a Samaritan, she self-drives a rebirth and joins the Polechester City Police, the smallest UK force. Initially tasked with Cold Cases, she is called in to solve a series of murders with sinister undertones and national implications. But who exactly is she? Who are her real masters? What is her agenda? Dubbed the She Wolf and the alpha female, she drives all before her in the search for answers and uncovers crimes of world class horror in Book One. Written in a very modern style, compelling, taught with emotion, passion and fear, Zara Vine will draw you in and grip you right through to the stunning conclusion. It will also stir your conscience as it asks some of the questions few dare confront.         U.S.A.

BREXIT CRISIS: May’s Plan Doomed? And Brexit too?

Tuesday, November 27th, 2018

It now seems clear that however you try to define it, Brexit is impossible to deliver. The whole proposition was from the very start an illusion. It is technically feasible, if everybody is agreed on how it is to be done, under what rules and without regard to the fact that irreconcilable interests are in play.

But if you factor in that the United Kingdom is split, with Scotland and Northern Ireland voting remain and England and Wales voting to leave and that the margins are narrow, you have a split country trying to make the biggest constitutional change since the days of Oliver Cromwell. And in a democracy to do that, you must have a clear and unambiguous majority, at least two thirds. Add to that unity must prevail for each preference. Yes must agree what yes means and No must agree what no means.

Every particle of that is missing in this current Brexit crisis, made worse by the Fixed Term Parliament Act, ending the traditional Prime Ministerial power to go to the country and the Supreme Court Ruling that Article 50 and its consequences must be subject to parliamentary approval. This tinkering with what had been previous practices within our unwritten constitution, has changed the country from one renowned for strong decisive government, to one where, for the moment at least, effective government has collapsed. The executive authority of the PM is hobbled and the executive power of the cabinet is split. If that is not enough we have to face the prospect of new sectarian unrest over the Irish Border and a dash for independence by an angry Scotland caught up in the chaos.

Both main parties are split on the key question and split again within each faction. Everybody is against May’s agreed withdrawal deal, but there is not only no other plan prepared, but no agreement anywhere over what such a plan should be. There is no prospect in sight of unity on what Brexit is and what the benefits will be. Eventually a consensus will emerge from the confusion to back the only known viable option.

To abandon the project and stay in the EU.

History In The Making: Anger to Follow?

Saturday, November 24th, 2018

Whatever your view of Brexit, mark my words, this is a moment when history is being made. As I was growing up as a child in the 1940s almost every observation about daily life made by middle class adults was prefaced with ‘of course before the war we could…….’  There was no such thing as maids any more and taxes were much higher as were prices. Life had changed and in the view of most, not for the better. We had won the war but the country was threadbare and tired and the Empire was crumbling. We had become a second class power.

But there was a social revolution going on which rightly advanced the interests of the working class by leaps and bounds with improvements in every sphere. The creation of the welfare state was life changing, so their conversations would be prefaced by  ‘in the bad old days’. There was full employment, wages were very much higher, there was the NHS, pensions, benefits and slum clearance. Hundreds of thousands of affordable homes were being built. The standard of living was rising year by year.

We can now be certain of one thing. Brexit is a before and after moment. There will be winners and losers. What we do not know is who is going to lose. But when we do and those losers find out it is they who are paying the price for this misplaced experiment, they  are going to be very angry. Because unlike world war two, Brexit was not thrust upon us by outside forces. It is entirely self inflicted.
